Skopje, North Macedonia
Ottoman architecture and traditional restaurants, but only visit during the day. The area empties out after 6-7 PM and locals avoid it at night.
One of the largest Ottoman marketplaces outside Turkey, with cobblestone streets running past craft shops, mosques, and traditional restaurants. During the day it's busy with tourists browsing jewelry, locals drinking Turkish coffee at sidewalk cafes, and kebab grills everywhere. The Mustafa Pasha Mosque is from the 15th century. You can climb to Kale Fortress for views over the red roofs. Timing matters here - after sunset around 6-7 PM, vendors close up and the streets empty fast. The lighting creates dark pockets between shops, and police presence drops off. Locals from other parts of Skopje avoid walking through here after dark. Visit during the day, then head to Debar Maalo or the city center for dinner.
