Bergen, Norway
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Bergen.
Historic neighborhood with wooden houses and local atmosphere. Budget-friendly and popular with students, but limited dining and nightlife. Five minutes by bus or ferry to downtown. Works for budget travelers who don't need to be in the center.
Sandviken sits northeast of the city center between Mount Fløyen and the sea. Narrow cobblestone streets lined with 18th and 19th century wooden houses painted in traditional colors. Unlike touristy Bryggen, this is where locals live their daily lives. Just 5 minutes by bus from downtown, but it feels much quieter and more residential. Students come here for cheaper accommodation. Small family-run cafes and Sandviken Food House serve affordable meals with sea views. The waterfront promenade has fjord and mountain views where locals run or walk. The Beffen ferry connects to the Fish Market and Nordnes if you want a boat ride instead of the bus. The tradeoff for lower prices and local atmosphere is location - street lighting isn't as good as downtown, and there's not much nightlife. You'll go to Sentrum or Skostredet for evening activities. Makes sense if you're on a budget and prefer local life over tourist convenience.
