East side neighborhood with Oslo's most diverse population. Good Middle-Eastern and Asian restaurants at lower prices than western neighborhoods. The area includes Gamlebyen (historic Old City) with medieval ruins, the Munch Museum, and Botanical Gardens. You'll see actual residents here, not tourists. Budget-friendly including accommodation. English is less common than in upscale areas - you might need translation apps. The multicultural restaurants are welcoming with big portions. Safe during the day, especially around museums and gardens. Less polished infrastructure than wealthier areas. More authentic but less tourist-convenient. Good cheap food if you're willing to explore.
