Muscat, Oman
Commercial district with cheap, diverse food and working-class atmosphere. Safe during day and early evening but less polished than tourist areas. Go for budget food and local feel.
Main commercial area, less modern than Al Khuwair. Best budget food in Muscat - Pakistani biryani, Indian places like Woodlands and Saravanabhavan, Chinese at Golden Oryx, roadside cafes with cheap shawarma and curry. Streets fill up in the evenings with office workers and expats, especially Ruwi High Street. Safe during day and early evening, but empties out after 10 PM when businesses close. You'll stand out more here than in tourist areas, though people are generally respectful. Main reason to come: authentic working-class Muscat and cheap food. Head back before late evening.
