Carmelitas is where the nightlife is in Asunción. Paseo Carmelitas on Av. España has dozens of bars, restaurants, and clubs in a pedestrian complex that gets busy after sunset. There's Peruvian fusion at Dos Mares, Mediterranean food at Detroit Restó, and bars like Kilkenny, Sheridans, and Cover Singing Bar with karaoke. The crowd is well-dressed locals and expats with money to spend - prices are high. Private security guards patrol the complex, so it feels reasonably safe even late at night. Things really get going after midnight on weekends when the clubs fill up. You'll see women eating alone at the restaurants and groups of women meeting for drinks. Parking is a nightmare on Friday and Saturday nights. More English spoken here since places cater to tourists and expats. During the day it's quiet and residential with upscale homes and gated communities.
