Arequipa, Peru
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Arequipa.
Residential area where locals actually live and work. Good for authentic food at local prices and seeing daily life, but no tourist infrastructure and almost no English. Safe but quiet, especially at night.
Cayma is a residential neighborhood where regular Arequipeños live - families grocery shopping, people going to work, kids in uniforms heading to school. You won't see many tourists, which means you get authentic local life but almost nobody speaks English past basic greetings. There are lots of picanterías serving huge portions of traditional food at local prices - you'll eat better for half what you'd pay in centro histórico. Feels safe during the day with families and shops around, though it gets quiet after dinner when people go inside. You'll see women eating alone at lunch in local restaurants, and it's welcoming if you try some basic Spanish. Trade-off is you're 15-20 minutes by taxi from the tourist areas, and there's no nightlife - people here don't stay out late at bars. Think of it as seeing real Arequipa instead of tourist Arequipa. Works if you want authentic food and cultural immersion, but you'll be commuting to centro for museums and evening stuff.
