Lima, Peru
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lima.
Colonial architecture worth seeing during the day. Serious safety issues after dark - visit midday with tours, watch for pickpockets, leave before evening.
The Historic Center has colonial architecture and UNESCO status. Plaza de Armas, the Government Palace, Cathedral, Santo Domingo church - it's worth seeing if you're into architecture. During the day it's busy with tour groups, office workers, vendors. Tourist police patrol the main plazas. But after 6pm when offices close and vendors leave, it empties out fast. Poor lighting, less police, and real crime problems including muggings. Even Lima residents avoid it at night. Visit midday when it's crowded, stick to the main plaza area, leave before sunset. Take organized tours instead of wandering alone. Uber in and out. Don't stay overnight here - stay in Miraflores or Barranco and just visit during daylight.
