San Juan, Puerto Rico
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in San Juan.
Beach resort area with luxury hotels and upscale restaurants. Very safe and English-friendly, though you pay for it and won't get much local culture.
Luxury hotels and designer boutiques line Ashford Avenue a few steps from the beach. The whole vibe is resort town - joggers at sunrise, families on the sand, dressed-up couples heading to dinner. English is the default at most places since they cater to international tourists and wealthy locals. Restaurants have bar seating where dining alone is normal and you can talk to bartenders or other travelers. The area stays lit and busy late with hotel security, private guards, and regular police patrols. The beach is the draw - soft sand, clear water, beach bars selling piña coladas. Everything costs more here, but you can walk around alone after dark without feeling unsafe. Wide sidewalks along the beach and main streets make it easy to get around on foot. It's touristy without much local character, but the safety and comfort are real.
