Doha, Qatar
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Doha.
Souq Waqif is the traditional market with authentic food, shopping, and atmosphere. Safe during busy evening hours, less so after 11pm when it empties out. Watch your belongings in crowds, but generally welcoming.
Souq Waqif is the restored traditional market where you'll find locals and tourists browsing stalls with spices, perfumes, textiles, and handicrafts. During the day it's a maze of narrow alleys with frankincense smell and vendors selling falcons to traditional clothes. After sunset it gets busy with families coming for dinner at restaurants serving Qatari, Persian, Turkish, and Lebanese food. Outdoor cafes serve karak tea and shisha late into the night. You'll see local women in groups and other travelers eating alone at restaurants. Police presence is good including Tourist Police who speak English. After 11pm when restaurants close and crowds leave, the narrow alleys get empty and dark. Stay in main areas and head out before it's too late. During busy times, watch your stuff - crowded conditions attract pickpockets. Most authentic cultural experience in Doha.
