Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Jeddah.
Historic UNESCO old town with traditional architecture and souks. Visit during daytime only - empties out and gets uncomfortable after dark.
Al-Balad is the UNESCO World Heritage old town with centuries-old coral houses and wooden balconies lining narrow alleys. During the day it's busy - locals shopping in traditional souks, tourists taking photos, cafes like Beit Ziryab in restored buildings. Al Basali Seafood has been here since 1949, and newer spots like Rosh An Cafe stay open late (until 3am). The Saudi government has poured money into restoration since 2014 UNESCO listing, fixing up buildings and turning some into guest lodges. Daytime feels safe with police around and locals who'll help if you look lost. It's the most authentic cultural experience in Jeddah. But leave before dark - the area empties out at night and those charming narrow alleys become poorly lit and uncomfortable. Do daytime tours for the history and architecture, then go to Al Rawdah or the Corniche for dinner.
