Details

Médina is one of Dakar's oldest neighborhoods - no tourist polish here. Narrow streets, colorful buildings, the Grand Mosque, Tilene market selling fabrics and spices. Cheap compared to upscale areas - budget guesthouses, street food, huge portions at local restaurants for way less than Almadies. Real Dakar life: families at corner stores, kids playing soccer, call to prayer five times a day. Almost no English spoken. You'll stand out as a foreigner - expect pushy vendors and persistent attention from hustlers. Generally safe if you're careful, especially during the day when streets are busy. Watch for pickpockets in crowds. At night stick to main streets with people around, not side alleys. For backpackers who want adventure and cultural immersion. If safety is your top priority, stay in Point E or Almadies.
