Dakar, Senegal
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Dakar.
Upscale residential area with high security and quiet atmosphere. Safe and peaceful but far from beaches and tourist sites. Good if you want security over location.
Mermoz-Sacré-Cœur is where wealthy Dakarois families live. Tree-lined streets, nice houses, private security, the Sacré-Cœur gardens. Quiet and safe, feels removed from central Dakar. Gourmet restaurants, nightclubs, ice cream places, bars, kids' parks - you can stay in the area for everything. Works for families or if you want quiet over being in the action. Good schools and green spaces. Less English spoken since it's a local upscale area, not an expat hub, though nicer restaurants will have some English speakers. Very safe to walk at night - police patrols and private security everywhere. Downside is you're far from beaches and tourist sites. You'll need taxis to get to Plateau, Gorée Island, or Almadies.
