Details

Ouakam is more local than the expat areas but has supermarkets and restaurants doing authentic Senegalese food. Sits between the airport and Les Almadies - cheaper alternative that's still close to beach and tourist areas. The massive African Renaissance Monument (49 meters) dominates the skyline. Local atmosphere means daily Senegalese life - families shopping, kids in uniforms, neighbors talking on corners. Less English than Almadies or Point E, basic French helps. Feels safe during the day when streets are busy. Noticeably cheaper for accommodation and food than Almadies. Main roads have decent lighting, side streets not so much. Good affordable option if you want to be near beaches without Almadies prices, but you lose some international atmosphere and English services. After dark stick to lit main roads or take taxis.
