Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Belgrade — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Former separate town with Austro-Hungarian character and fish restaurants on the Danube. Quiet and safe, good for a day trip or as a base if you want peace. You'll need to go to the center for nightlife.

Details

Zemun used to be a separate town and still feels different from the rest of Belgrade. Architecture is Austro-Hungarian rather than Ottoman or communist - more Central European looking. The riverfront promenade has fish restaurants (Belgrade's usually about grilled meat, so this is the exception). Gardoš Hill has a tower with river views. Much slower pace than the center and very safe. Works as a day trip or a quieter base if the old town feels too busy. Less English spoken than central Belgrade.
