Former military barracks turned alternative cultural center with street art, underground music clubs, and LGBTQ+ venues. Grittier than other neighborhoods. Interesting during the day, edgy at night.
Metelkova is a former Yugoslav military barracks turned autonomous cultural center. Street art covers everything, scrap metal sculptures in the courtyards, self-managed space run by artists and squatters. During the day you can walk around looking at the graffiti and installations. At night it becomes Ljubljana's underground music and LGBTQ+ scene. Klub Tiffany is the main gay club (open since 1993), pop and techno nights. Monokel is the only lesbian club. Channel Zero does underground techno and house. Gala Hala has live concerts. The crowd is alternative and diverse - locals and international visitors who've heard about the place. Drinks aren't expensive. This isn't a polished tourist spot. It can feel edgy at night when clubs are packed and people are drinking. Stick to the main club areas, go with others if you can, trust your gut. Generally safe but very different from the clean Old Town.
