Durban, South Africa
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Durban.
The main beachfront - warm swimming, lifeguards on duty, busy during the day. Strictly daytime only. Crime takes over after dark and everyone local will tell you to stay away at night.
The 6km beachfront promenade from uShaka Marine World to Blue Lagoon - Durban's main tourist draw. During the day it's busy and relatively safe: lifeguards on duty, shark nets in the water, law enforcement visible every few kilometers. Ocean stays warm year-round (21°C even in winter), beaches packed with local families on weekends. Beach vendors sell coconuts, jewelry, whatever - prices are tourist-inflated so negotiate. Promenade gets cleaned mornings, joggers and cyclists use it all day. But sunset changes everything. Once it gets dark, crime takes over the beachfront. Locals all say the same thing: don't be here after dark. Crowds clear out by 5-6pm, lighting is spotty, the area gets dangerous. Even shopkeepers say don't wander back streets during the day. Use the beaches in morning or afternoon, swim where lifeguards are posted, keep valuables hidden, leave before sunset. Evening activities belong in Florida Road, Umhlanga, or Morningside.
