Durban, South Africa
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Durban.
The safest, most family-oriented suburb - schools, parks, shopping centers. Far from beaches and nightlife. For families or people prioritizing safety over everything else. Not much appeal for solo travelers.
Family suburb about 20km inland from the beachfront. Good schools, parks, shopping centers, safe and friendly. Where South African families raise kids - soccer practice, weekend braais, shopping at Westville Junction or The Pavilion. Zero tourist infrastructure, which means you see middle-class South African life without the tourist gloss. Olive and Oil has play areas and kids eat free Sundays, Marula's Coffee Shop has outdoor seating, ATasca does Portuguese food. Very wholesome and safe - security at shopping centers, well-lit residential streets. No nightlife though. Limited evening entertainment. Nothing is walkable - you need Uber or a car for everything. 20 minutes drive to the beach, so if ocean access matters, stay elsewhere. Works for families or travelers who want maximum safety and don't care about location. English is common. Feels more like American suburbs than African coast. Budget accommodation is limited, mostly guesthouses and B&Bs since it's residential.
