Details

Maboneng means 'Place of Light' in Sotho. It's a redeveloped arts district from abandoned industrial buildings, and it's literally an island of safety surrounded by rougher areas. The precinct has private security, good lighting, and steady foot traffic during the day and evening. Sunday Market on Main (10am-3pm) draws crowds for craft vendors, street food, and live music. You'll see people working on laptops at cafes, and restaurant staff are used to international visitors. The rooftop bars - Living Room, Jojo - stay busy late with Johannesburg's creative crowd. Stay within the precinct boundaries and don't wander outside them. Always Uber directly to and from Maboneng rather than walking from nearby areas. Inside the boundaries, you can explore comfortably during the day and evening with security visible on most corners.
