Details

Parkhurst's Fourth Avenue is an 8-block dining strip from 6th to 14th Street with restaurants, cafes, and bars. Young professionals and families come here, creating a safe, village atmosphere that's more relaxed than Sandton but more upscale than Melville. There's Italian at Bottega Cafe and Modena, fine dining at Embarc, tapas at Nineteen on Fourth, and Greek at Yia Yia's hidden courtyard. The cafe scene includes Coppa pâtisserie (run by a Brazilian chef) and several coffee spots good for working alone. The street stays busy most evenings with people walking between restaurants, and security is visible with private guards. Safe enough to walk the main Fourth Avenue during the day and early evening, but still Uber after 10pm. The crowd is mostly affluent locals rather than tourists, so you get more authentic experiences than Sandton with similar safety. English is widely spoken in restaurants. Eating alone is completely normal - many locals do it while reading or on their phones. The residential streets around Fourth Avenue are quiet and tree-lined.
