Hongdae is the student nightlife area around Hongik University - busy from afternoon until 5am. Hundreds of bars, clubs, live music venues, and cafes for the university crowd. Daytime has quirky shops, street performers, laptop-friendly cafes. At night it's party central with club music everywhere and people bar-hopping until dawn. Women eating street food alone at midnight or dancing at clubs is normal. The vibe is casual and accepting, way more relaxed than Gangnam. English is more common here since there are lots of international students and English teachers. Watch your drink in clubs, stick to busy areas, use official taxis or subway to get home. Streets are well-lit but some side alleys get sketchy after 2am.
