Details

Insadong is the traditional arts area with tea houses in hanok buildings and galleries selling calligraphy and ceramics. The main pedestrian street (Insadong-gil) has shops with traditional crafts, antiques, and art - touristy but more authentic than Myeongdong. Weekends have street performers and artisans. The good spots are traditional tea houses down side alleys where you sit on floor cushions drinking jujube tea. Tea houses are fine with people reading or working alone - the whole area is peaceful and quiet compared to most Seoul neighborhoods. English is less common but shop staff expect tourists. After dark when shops close around 8pm it gets quiet and residential - good for peaceful walks but no nightlife. Visit during the day for the cultural stuff.
