Authentic residential neighborhood with tree-lined streets and local cafes. Connected to the center but feels genuinely Spanish - families, corner bars, reasonable prices. The restaurant scene on Calle Ponzano is worth exploring.

Details

This feels like a proper Spanish neighborhood - tree-lined streets with families walking to school, older men reading newspapers at corner bars, and tiny plazas where kids play after school. Calle Ponzano has turned into a food destination with about 15 restaurants in three blocks, but it's still locals eating there, not tour groups. The metro gets you to Sol in 10 minutes, but you're far enough out that restaurant prices are reasonable and servers might not speak English. It's safe and residential, though quiet at night compared to the party zones.

Salamanca is where Madrid's money lives - designer shopping on Serrano street and restaurants that charge accordingly. You'll pay tourist prices but get serious security in return. Very safe to walk around anytime, though you'll feel underdressed if you show up in backpacker gear.
