El Palo is a traditional seafront barrio next to Pedregalejo that still has a fishing-village feel. It has a long beach, a working harbour and a promenade where locals walk in the evening. The beachfront restaurants fill with local families on weekends, and prices are lower than in the centre. It works as a half-day trip from the old town by bus or bike, and there is little tourist hassle. The streets inland are ordinary residential ones, quiet at night, and it's best not to wander far from the seafront after dark. Very little English is spoken in the local places, so a translation app helps.
