Pedregalejo is a former fishing village on the eastern edge of the city, and a good place to spend a day or an evening by the sea. A long strip of beachfront chiringuitos serves grilled sardine skewers (espetos), fried fish and cold drinks, and the small streets behind have tapas bars, little shops and low whitewashed houses. It has a local feel, with families, students and couples all on the promenade. It's easy to do alone: eat at a beachfront table, walk the promenade to El Palo and swim in the shallow, calm water. The neighbourhood is quiet late at night and the last buses run at set hours, so plan your way home in advance and take a taxi if the buses have stopped. Some English is spoken but Spanish helps.
