Colombo, Sri Lanka
Middle ground between local life and tourist comfort. Nightlife is developing, food is cheaper, but you'll need more caution at night than in upscale areas.
Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4) sits between local life and tourist infrastructure - more authentic than Colombo 7, still manageable for travelers. Galle Road has local shops, restaurants, and some international chains. Side streets are quieter and residential. You'll find cheap rice and curry places next to upscale hotel restaurants. The area's developed a nightlife scene - ON14 Rooftop Bar has ocean views, R&B club gets both locals and visitors. During the day, markets and shops are busy with local families more than tourists. People eat alone at cafes and restaurants, though you might get more stares than in expat areas. Safe enough during daylight with some police around, but street lighting is inconsistent on smaller roads. After 10pm, stick to main roads or use ride apps. English works at most restaurants and shops, but not as universally as Colombo 3 or 7.
