Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Middle ground between expat zones and rougher areas. More affordable, more authentic, reasonably safe. Better for travelers with some Africa experience who want local culture without Peninsula prices. Less English, more adaptation needed.
Mikocheni sits between the expensive expat zones and the rougher central areas. Mid-level professionals, retirees, and expats who pay their own rent end up here. More affordable than Masaki and Oyster Bay but still reasonably safe. You'll find semi-local bars and restaurants where prices drop significantly, though you'll see fewer foreigners. The streets are well-planned with decent lighting and a decent safety reputation for Dar. Local places serve good Tanzanian food at actual local prices - big portions for a fraction of Masaki costs. English is much less common here, so Swahili basics help. Gets quiet at night, and you still shouldn't walk after dark despite the relative safety. It's more authentic than the Peninsula, better value, but requires more cultural adaptation. You'll actually interact with Tanzanian daily life - local shops, neighborhood spots, residential streets where people actually live. Works better if you've spent time in East Africa before and want to balance safety with real local experience.

Diplomatic area with embassies, upscale hotels, heavy security. Good for sophisticated dining and nightlife with international standards. Skip Coco Beach, especially after dark.
The safest, most foreigner-friendly part of Dar. Good restaurants, cafes, security. Expensive and cut off from local culture, but first-timers often prefer it for the safety and English.
Authentic middle-class Tanzanian neighborhood near the business district. Budget dining, reasonable daytime safety. Limited English and no tourist infrastructure - better for experienced travelers who want local culture over comfort. Don't walk at night.
