Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Authentic middle-class Tanzanian neighborhood near the business district. Budget dining, reasonable daytime safety. Limited English and no tourist infrastructure - better for experienced travelers who want local culture over comfort. Don't walk at night.
Close to the Central Business District, Upanga is where actual Tanzanians live - professionals, businesspeople, middle to high-income locals. No international bubble here. You get authentic local life with reasonable daytime safety. Budget dining serves 'Sururu' street food, grilled meats, some international options. Upanga Club has good food at real prices compared to tourist zones. Close to schools, hospitals, shopping centers - functional neighborhood infrastructure. English is limited, most interactions need basic Swahili. Some foreigners stay here but you'll stand out more than in Masaki or Oyster Bay. 'As safe as anywhere in a city of 3 million people' - which means use normal caution during the day and absolutely don't walk anywhere at night. Streets get quiet and poorly lit after dark. Central Park Café & Restaurant does American-inspired food with Tanzanian hospitality, popular with families. Works if you want to see how middle-class Tanzanians actually live, have some Africa experience, and want authenticity over comfort. But you need to be okay standing out and navigating a place where English is rare.

Middle ground between expat zones and rougher areas. More affordable, more authentic, reasonably safe. Better for travelers with some Africa experience who want local culture without Peninsula prices. Less English, more adaptation needed.
The safest, most foreigner-friendly part of Dar. Good restaurants, cafes, security. Expensive and cut off from local culture, but first-timers often prefer it for the safety and English.
Diplomatic area with embassies, upscale hotels, heavy security. Good for sophisticated dining and nightlife with international standards. Skip Coco Beach, especially after dark.
