Stone Town has the history, architecture, museums, and markets. Safe and interesting during the day. Poor lighting and empty streets after dark mean you should plan daytime visits and taxi home at night.
Stone Town is the UNESCO-listed historic center with narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and old Swahili buildings. During the day it's busy - spice vendors, shops, tour groups, locals at Darajani Market. Tourist Police are around and many speak English. Eating alone at cafes and restaurants is normal, staff are used to foreign visitors. But timing matters. After sunset around 6:30pm, vendors close up and those charming narrow alleys get dark and empty fast. Even locals avoid the back streets after 10pm. Visit museums, markets, and spice shops during the day. Have dinner at a rooftop restaurant for the sunset view, then get a taxi back to your hotel rather than walking through the alleys at night.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Jambiani has authentic village life on tidal beaches without Paje's crowds and development. Safe and quiet, good for peace and seeing local culture rather than nightlife.
Paje is the kitesurfing and backpacker hub with a young, active vibe. Tidal beach and budget places to stay. Good for meeting people and beach activities.
Nungwi has the busiest beach scene on Zanzibar with all-day swimming and a young crowd. Feels safe with constant activity but very touristy and crowded in peak season.
