Details

Stone Town is the UNESCO-listed historic center with narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and old Swahili buildings. During the day it's busy - spice vendors, shops, tour groups, locals at Darajani Market. Tourist Police are around and many speak English. Eating alone at cafes and restaurants is normal, staff are used to foreign visitors. But timing matters. After sunset around 6:30pm, vendors close up and those charming narrow alleys get dark and empty fast. Even locals avoid the back streets after 10pm. Visit museums, markets, and spice shops during the day. Have dinner at a rooftop restaurant for the sunset view, then get a taxi back to your hotel rather than walking through the alleys at night.
