Tunis, Tunisia
French colonial charm with tree-lined boulevards and cafes, safe during busy daytime hours but requiring caution after dark when streets empty. Best experienced during the day before heading to coastal areas for evening.
Downtown centers around the tree-lined Avenue Habib Bourguiba, often called the Champs-Élysées of North Africa, where colonial-era buildings house cafes, shops, and businesses. The area buzzes during business hours with office workers grabbing lunch at sidewalk cafes and families window shopping. Le Grand Café du Théâtre and other French-inspired cafes serve pastries and espresso, popular spots for sitting and people-watching. The architecture mixes French colonial and early 20th-century European styles, different from the Medina's Islamic character. During the day it's safe to walk around with police presence and crowds of locals. The Theatre Municipal and Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul are worth visiting. Once shops close around 7pm and office workers head home, the area empties out quickly and feels less safe. Street lighting is decent along the main avenue but side streets get dark. Take taxis after dark rather than walking. English is limited except in hotels and tourist-oriented businesses, but French is widely understood.

The upscale beach suburb with a relaxed Mediterranean vibe, cafes, and low crime. It's far from historical sites but the most comfortable westernized area in Tunis.
Tunisia's most photogenic village with blue and white architecture and Mediterranean views. Very safe, though steep hills and more of a day trip than a base location.
Upscale historical neighborhood built around ancient ruins. Extremely safe for history lovers, though limited dining and nightlife mean most visitors explore during the day and head elsewhere for evenings.
