Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Old Dubai with traditional souks. Interesting for daytime visits and cheap food, but avoid after dark. Expect constant attention from vendors and men.
Old Dubai around the Creek - this is where the city started in the 1700s. The Gold Souk and Spice Souk are the traditional bazaar experience. During the day it's busy with vendors shouting prices, cardamom and saffron smells, locals bargaining. Budget dining like Sind Punjab (serving since 1977) and CoffeeTea Fusion by the water. English is less common - shopkeepers know enough for negotiating. The problem is the day-to-night shift. Daytime when the souks are packed feels reasonably safe. After dark when tourists leave it gets quiet and sketchy. As a woman you'll get constant attention from shopkeepers and vendors - some trying to sell, some hitting on you. It gets tiring. Taxi in and out rather than walking around at night. Visit during peak souk hours.
