Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Restored heritage district with museums, traditional souqs, and 1950s architecture. Good for daytime cultural visits but empties out at night. Dress very modestly.
Heart of Sharjah is the restored heritage district - they've brought the old town back to its 1950s look with coral stone houses, wind towers, and traditional courtyards. It's a big restoration project with museums, Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn), souqs selling spices and textiles, and cultural centers showing pre-oil Emirati life. Souq vendors are chatty and haggling is normal. You'll find actual local products, not mass-produced tourist stuff. Fen Café in the Sharjah Art Foundation does good coffee and Emirati-inspired snacks in a modern-meets-heritage space. The Café at The Chedi Al Bait serves Turkish coffee and pastries under the UAE's only remaining circular wind tower. Tourist police are around during the day (roughly 8am-7pm) and museum staff speak English. But the area empties out at night - most places close and hardly anyone lives there. It's set up for daytime visits: museums, souqs, architecture, cafes. Dress more modestly here than elsewhere - cover shoulders, arms to elbows, legs below knees. The cultural and religious significance matters. Good if you're into history and architecture.
