West Asheville is a laid-back, local alternative to downtown with good breakfast spots and casual evening options. It's low-key and comfortable, but you'll need a ride to get downtown at night.
Across the French Broad River from downtown, West Asheville is where many locals go, with an independent feel centered on Haywood Road. The street has bakeries, breakfast spots, record and vintage shops, taprooms, small music venues and plant shops, and it reads as a neighborhood rather than a tourist district. It's easy to walk during the day and early evening, and the crowd is friendly and creative. Streets get quieter and darker after the restaurants close, and beyond Haywood Road the area is residential and hilly. Locals are usually happy to give directions or recommendations. It makes sense as a base if you want something less touristy and don't mind a short drive or rideshare to downtown.

Downtown is the easiest base for a first visit, with the widest choice of food, music and bars within walking distance. Some street activity at the edges of the core is normal, and the usual city precautions apply at night.
Montford is a quiet base close to downtown, with small inns and a few good restaurants. It suits travelers who want calm evenings and personal hosts, and who will take a ride into town for nightlife.
South Slope is the easiest place to work through Asheville's craft beer scene alone, with relaxed taprooms and plenty to eat. It empties out quickly late at night, so arrange your ride home in advance.
