Decatur is an easy day trip or quiet base outside the city, with good food and a safe feel. It lacks the sights of Atlanta proper, so it fits best as a low-key addition to the trip.
Decatur is a small, independent city just east of Atlanta, about 20 minutes by MARTA from Midtown. Its historic square is built around a MARTA station and surrounded by independent restaurants, bookstores, pubs and a farmers market, with a college-town and family feel. The square is walkable and busy at lunch and dinner, and solo diners are common at the bars in places like the Brick Store Pub. Decatur has its own police department and is quieter than Atlanta proper, and the compact square is fine to walk in the evening. It is not a base for sightseeing in Atlanta, but it works as a half-day trip or a quiet place to stay if you prefer a small-town feel. Stations and streets farther from the square are quieter, so check the walk from the MARTA stop if you return late.

Virginia-Highland is a safe, pleasant neighborhood, best for daytime strolling and early dinners. Without a car it works better as a place to visit than to stay, because public transport and hotels are limited.
Midtown is the best all-round base in Atlanta for a woman traveling alone, with culture, parks, restaurants and MARTA access in one walkable area. The main risks are car break-ins and occasional late-night incidents near bars, and a rideshare after dark avoids most of both.
Buckhead suits people who want comfortable hotels, shopping and quiet streets more than nightlife. It is safe by day and generally fine in the evening if you stick to restaurants and use rideshares. The weekend bar scene can get rowdy.
