Downtown is where the big attractions and event nights are, and it works well on a daytime itinerary. After dark and away from the park it feels isolated, so most solo travelers do better staying in Midtown and coming here by rideshare.
Downtown is Atlanta's tourism and convention core, with Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, the College Football Hall of Fame, the Civil and Human Rights Center and State Farm Arena. The area right around the park and attractions is clean, busy and patrolled by police and the Downtown Ambassador Force, uniformed hospitality and safety staff on foot and bikes. The mood changes quickly beyond this core. Office streets are quiet after work, and blocks south of Five Points and around some MARTA stations have visible homelessness, begging and drug activity. It works well for daytime visits and events, and many solo visitors stay in Midtown and use rideshare or the streetcar to get here. Sweet Auburn, an important African American historic district, is a short ride east.

Old Fourth Ward is the best part of Atlanta for eating, walking and people-watching. It feels safe in busy hours, and it needs some care at night when the trail and side streets empty out.
Buckhead suits people who want comfortable hotels, shopping and quiet streets more than nightlife. It is safe by day and generally fine in the evening if you stick to restaurants and use rideshares. The weekend bar scene can get rowdy.
Virginia-Highland is a safe, pleasant neighborhood, best for daytime strolling and early dinners. Without a car it works better as a place to visit than to stay, because public transport and hotels are limited.
