East Austin is the area for creative food, coffee and bars. It is comfortable by day and early evening, but side streets are quiet and poorly lit late at night.
East Austin has the murals, breweries, coffee shops, food trucks and many of the city's best restaurants. The area has changed a lot and now mixes long-time residents, artists and newer businesses. Streets around East Cesar Chavez and East 6th fill with diners and bar-goers in the evening, while daytime is relaxed. Eating alone is easy at most places. Late at night, quieter blocks away from the restaurants are poorly lit, and the stretch of East 6th with the larger bars can get rowdy. Stay near the busy areas and take a rideshare late at night. Sidewalks are patchy in places, and many spots are easiest to reach by car or rideshare.

Zilker is the area for swimming, trails and a quiet day outdoors. It is calm at night, and the trails and parks are best avoided after dark.
South Lamar and Bouldin Creek are a casual, local area for restaurants, cafes and a quieter night out. Venues are spread apart, so use a rideshare after dark.
Downtown is the most convenient base for sights, restaurants and live music, and it is comfortable by day. Nights on Sixth and Rainey Streets are loud and drunken, so go with others and take a rideshare home.
