Zilker is the area for swimming, trails and a quiet day outdoors. It is calm at night, and the trails and parks are best avoided after dark.
Zilker is where Austin goes outside, around Zilker Metropolitan Park, Barton Springs Pool and the Lady Bird Lake trails. The neighborhood itself is quiet and residential, with casual restaurants and cafes along Barton Springs Road and Lake Austin Boulevard. By day it is busy with swimmers, runners, paddleboarders and families, and solo visitors blend in easily. Evenings are calm. The park and trails are poorly lit after dark and not a place to walk alone at night. Parking is limited and cars left at trailheads are frequently broken into, so leave nothing visible. In summer, bring water and sun protection, since shade is limited and the heat is intense.
