The South End is Boston's strongest neighborhood for food, art and LGBTQ+ nightlife, and is comfortable along the main streets for women on their own. It changes quickly from block to block, and the Mass Ave and Melnea Cass edge is best avoided at night.
The South End is known for restaurants and art, with the largest collection of Victorian row houses in the country, community gardens, galleries and one of the city's largest LGBTQ+ communities. Tremont Street and Shawmut Avenue are lined with wine bars, brunch spots and independent restaurants, and plenty of women dine alone or with friends at counters and patios. The core around Tremont, Shawmut and Columbus Avenue is safe and busy, and it is an easy walk to Back Bay. The neighborhood is mixed, though. Blocks close to Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard have a visible homeless and addiction population and feel much rougher at night. Stay in the area north of Tremont and Washington Street, and take a rideshare late if you are heading toward the Mass Ave side.

Fenway-Kenmore is lively and student-friendly, with major museums and baseball, and reasonable safety on main streets. Game and event crowds bring rowdiness and pickpockets, and the park and side streets are best avoided after dark.
The North End is atmospheric, walkable and generally safe for women on their own, with some of Boston's best food. Waits at popular places are long, and the streets away from Hanover Street get quiet at night.
The Seaport is modern, clean and comfortable for women on their own, with good seafood, rooftop bars and the ICA. It lacks the historic character of other neighborhoods and is expensive, and some streets are empty late at night.
