The Hill Section is a calm student neighborhood with older houses and easy walking, and it's a quieter base than downtown. Expect the occasional loud weekend near student houses and a steep, icy climb in winter.
The Hill Section climbs east from downtown to the University of Vermont campus, with large Victorian houses, tree-lined streets, bed and breakfasts and student life. It's calm and residential, and one of the more comfortable areas to walk, with student foot traffic and lighting along College Street and Main Street. The campus greens, Redstone and the Ira Allen area are quiet. Weekends can be loud on side streets near student houses, and the long hill between downtown and campus is hard going when it's icy. It works as a base if you want a quieter stay within easy walking distance of Church Street. The campus also has its own safety services and escorts, though these are meant for students.

The waterfront is the most scenic part of Burlington and one of the easiest areas to be on your own, with plenty of people around in daylight and early evening. Late at night the path gets quiet, so stay near the lit restaurant stretch.
Downtown and Church Street are where most of Burlington's dining and nightlife is. Days and evenings are easy for anyone on their own, though the side streets and parks feel less pleasant late at night once the crowds thin out.
The South End is a district of breweries, roasteries and studios that's easy by day and early evening. It's more spread out than downtown, so plan on a ride rather than walking the long industrial blocks late at night.
