Details

The Old North End is Burlington's oldest and most diverse neighborhood, with long-established refugee and immigrant communities, community gardens, small family-run restaurants and a handful of independent cafes. North Winooski Avenue and North Street are the main strips, and they have some of the cheapest good food in the city, from Vietnamese and Nepali to Mexican and North African. In daylight it's friendly and easy to explore on foot or by bike. Evenings are quieter and more residential, and there is some visible drug use and homelessness at the southern end near Church Street and in a few spots along North Winooski Avenue. Most visitors have no trouble, but take a ride back after late dinners rather than walking alone.

The South End is a district of breweries, roasteries and studios that's easy by day and early evening. It's more spread out than downtown, so plan on a ride rather than walking the long industrial blocks late at night.

The waterfront is the most scenic part of Burlington and one of the easiest areas to be on your own, with plenty of people around in daylight and early evening. Late at night the path gets quiet, so stay near the lit restaurant stretch.
