The waterfront is the most scenic part of Burlington and one of the easiest areas to be on your own, with plenty of people around in daylight and early evening. Late at night the path gets quiet, so stay near the lit restaurant stretch.
The waterfront runs along Lake Champlain from Waterfront Park north past the Community Boathouse, with a lit multi-use path, a boardwalk, sunset spots and lakeside restaurants and breweries. By day and at sunset it's full of walkers, runners, cyclists and families, and it's one of the more comfortable places in the city to spend time alone. After dark the path empties quickly, especially north of the boathouse, so stay on the stretch near Lake Street and Battery Street where restaurants, hotels and lighting are. In winter the wind off the lake is cold and the boardwalks get icy, so footwear matters. The ECHO Leahy Center, cruise boats and bike rentals are all here, which makes it an easy first stop.

The South End is a district of breweries, roasteries and studios that's easy by day and early evening. It's more spread out than downtown, so plan on a ride rather than walking the long industrial blocks late at night.
The Hill Section is a calm student neighborhood with older houses and easy walking, and it's a quieter base than downtown. Expect the occasional loud weekend near student houses and a steep, icy climb in winter.
Downtown and Church Street are where most of Burlington's dining and nightlife is. Days and evenings are easy for anyone on their own, though the side streets and parks feel less pleasant late at night once the crowds thin out.
