A local, relaxed neighborhood with good coffee and casual restaurants, and the best budget base in the city. It is quiet after dark, so plan on a ride in the evening.
Cannonborough-Elliotborough sits just west of King Street, and a lot of locals live and eat here. Restored historic houses share the streets with small restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops, and it feels like a residential neighborhood more than a tourist area. It is quieter than Upper King and much emptier after dark, so streets can feel deserted late in the evening, though the blocks near the busier roads see more mixed foot traffic. Walking is easy in the daytime, and the casual restaurants and craft coffee are a good reason to come. Most places have counters or bars for solo diners. The city's hostel is here, which makes it the main budget base, and the main sights are a 10-15 minute walk away. Take a rideshare back at night, especially after 10 PM.

Upper King has the best concentration of restaurants and cocktail bars, and the main street feels safe while it is busy. Leave before the late bar crowds, and take a ride home if you are staying far away.
South of Broad is quiet and very safe, good for daytime walks and a low-key stay. There is little nightlife, so dinner and drinks mean heading north.
The French Quarter is the most convenient base for a first visit, with good restaurants and nearly everything within walking distance. Expect tourist prices and crowds, and watch for petty theft around Market Street.
