A calmer, coastal alternative to downtown, with waterfront dining and beach access. Getting to the historic district takes a ride or a car.
The Old Village is the historic center of Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River bridge from the peninsula. It has tree-lined streets, small cafes and family restaurants, and nearby Shem Creek has waterfront restaurants and bars where shrimp boats dock. It is more suburban than downtown, calmer at night, and mostly a local and family crowd. It works as a base if you want quiet and easy parking and can accept a 10-20 minute drive into the historic district, depending on traffic. Public transit is limited, so plan on rideshares or a rental car. Streets are quiet at night and mostly well lit, and Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms beaches are close. Casual waterfront spots and cafes are fine for eating alone.

South of Broad is quiet and very safe, good for daytime walks and a low-key stay. There is little nightlife, so dinner and drinks mean heading north.
The French Quarter is the most convenient base for a first visit, with good restaurants and nearly everything within walking distance. Expect tourist prices and crowds, and watch for petty theft around Market Street.
A local, relaxed neighborhood with good coffee and casual restaurants, and the best budget base in the city. It is quiet after dark, so plan on a ride in the evening.
