South of Broad is quiet and very safe, good for daytime walks and a low-key stay. There is little nightlife, so dinner and drinks mean heading north.
At the southern tip of the peninsula, South of Broad is mostly private homes: antebellum houses, pastel mansions and church spires, with the Battery's seawall promenade along the water. It is quiet and low-crime by day, and calm at night because most streets have houses rather than bars. There are few shops, so coffee and dinner mean walking in from neighboring areas. White Point Garden and the Battery are good for a morning or sunset walk, with other walkers around. Late at night the lanes are dark and empty, so take a rideshare rather than walking in from Upper King. The inns and bed and breakfasts here suit people who want quiet, and the house tours are a decent introduction to the city's architecture and history.
