Chicago, United States
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Chicago.
Alternative arts area with vintage shopping, creative restaurants, and nightlife. More local than touristy, inclusive atmosphere, decent safety. Good if you want the artsy side of Chicago.
Wicker Park and Bucktown are the alternative/artsy area - vintage shops, record stores, art galleries, and creative restaurants around Milwaukee, Damen, and North. Young, artsy crowd. Street art in alleys, local musicians at small venues. During the day you'll see people at cafes on laptops or browsing thrift stores. At night it becomes a nightlife spot with dive bars and cocktail places. Good lighting and foot traffic, even late on weekends. Wicker Park is busier, Bucktown (just north) is more residential and quieter. The LGBTQ+ community is visible here and the vibe is inclusive. About 15-20 minutes from downtown on the Blue Line. The neighborhood has gentrified a lot but still feels more local than touristy.
