Capitol Hill is an affordable neighborhood with a strong LGBTQ+ scene and a lived-in, local character. It is fine by day and in busy venues, but needs more care on the Colfax side and late at night.
East of downtown, Capitol Hill is a dense neighborhood of historic mansions, apartment buildings, dive bars and theaters, and it is the center of the city's LGBTQ+ community. Rents and prices are lower than in the glossier districts, and the population mixes students, artists and long-time residents. The quieter residential streets are fine by day, while the Colfax Avenue corridor on the north edge can feel rough at night, with street drug use and homelessness. Stay on the busy parts of 13th Avenue and the main corners after dark. It suits travelers who want a local feel rather than a polished one.
