New Orleans, United States
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in New Orleans.
Upscale residential area with old architecture and Magazine Street shopping. Safe for walking and has good restaurants, but no real nightlife - you'll go elsewhere in the evenings.
The Garden District has big antebellum mansions with wraparound porches, old oak trees over the streets, and manicured gardens behind iron fences. It's quieter and more residential than the French Quarter - fewer tourists, fewer scams, less aggressive behavior. Middle and upper-class families live here. You'll see people walking dogs, kids in school uniforms, joggers in the morning. Magazine Street runs through with six miles of boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. The St. Charles Streetcar drops you here for $1.50. Streets are well-lit with foot traffic until around 10pm. After that it gets quiet, so use Uber instead of walking alone. Less crowded than the French Quarter, which works if you want a break from the tourist scene. Not much nightlife - this is for architecture, walking around, and brunch.
