New Orleans, United States
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in New Orleans.
The music neighborhood centered on Frenchmen Street, with jazz clubs and late-night activity. The main strip has crowds and feels reasonably safe, but residential streets are quiet and poorly lit - use rideshare.
Frenchmen Street in Marigny is where locals go for live music. Different vibe than Bourbon Street - actual jazz clubs, smaller crowds, musicians who live here. The intersection of Decatur and Frenchmen stays busy until late with people moving between venues like The Spotted Cat, d.b.a., and Three Muses. Frenchmen Street itself has constant foot traffic and venue security. The issue is that Marigny is mostly residential. Turn off Frenchmen onto side streets and it gets very quiet with poor lighting. During the day you can walk to the French Quarter or look at the Creole cottages. At night, use Uber or Lyft instead of walking through residential blocks. The walk between the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street can be sketchy after dark - take the streetcar until 11pm or a cab. The music scene is the draw. Organized bar crawls let you hit the venues without worrying about walking alone.
