The Pearl District is a tidy, central neighborhood with restaurants, galleries and bookstores, and it works well for a first solo visit. It costs more than the east side and has less character, but it is a convenient base within walking distance of most Downtown sights.
The Pearl District is a former rail yard that is now a polished, walkable area of converted warehouses, galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Streets are wide, well lit and busy with residents, office workers and visitors until late evening, so walking alone feels comfortable. The Streetcar runs through it and Powell's City of Books marks its southern edge. Restaurant and bar staff are used to solo diners, and counter and bar seating is common. The thing to watch is the southern edge: toward Burnside and Old Town the feel changes, with more street camping and fewer people after dark. Parked cars get broken into, so keep nothing visible inside.

The Northwest District is a safe, walkable base with good food and easy access to parks. It is quieter at night than the east side and has a smaller nightlife scene, but it is one of the easiest neighborhoods for a first visit.
Alberta is a creative neighborhood with good food and independent shopping. It works well for women traveling alone, particularly in the daytime and early evening. It is farther from Downtown and the MAX, so late nights call for a ride.
Hawthorne is an easygoing east-side street with plenty to do and good food. It is low-key, though farther from Downtown. It suits a solo traveler who likes bookshops, music venues and relaxed pubs.
