The Granary District is a creative area with good coffee, cocktails and affordable lodging. It is comfortable by day, but the empty streets and nearby homelessness make rideshares the better choice at night.
The Granary District is a former industrial area just south of downtown, now filled with coffee roasters, breweries, cocktail bars, galleries and artists' studios. It is rougher around the edges than the East Bench or downtown, and still a mix of warehouses and newer buildings. Daytime is relaxed, and the better-known cafes and bars draw a steady crowd. The streets between venues can be empty and dimly lit, and the area borders parts of Central 9th and Rio Grande where homelessness and drug activity are more visible, so take a rideshare between places in the evening. It suits a budget stay, since a hostel here has women-only shared rooms.

Downtown is the most central base for a solo trip, with walkable sights, plenty of transit and many places to eat alone. It is comfortable by day and on the main streets in the evening, but the west side near Pioneer Park and Rio Grande is best avoided at night.
9th and 9th is a village-style neighborhood with good cafes and a low-key, safe atmosphere. It works well for afternoons, brunch and early dinners, but nightlife is limited and getting to downtown means a short ride.
Sugar House is a walkable neighborhood with a strong food and drink scene and a calm residential edge. Evenings feel safe, and it suits travelers who want a local atmosphere more than the downtown core.
