Details

A few miles south-east of downtown, Sugar House is built around a business district at the intersection of 2100 South and Highland Drive. It has a park, a streetcar line, independent shops and one of the bigger clusters of casual restaurants, cafes and bars in the city. A food hall in a former post office, a Spanish wine bar and several cocktail spots draw a young crowd, and sitting alone with a book or laptop is normal. Streets are lit and busy into the evening, and the surrounding blocks are residential and calm. It makes a good base if you want a local feel and can live with a TRAX and streetcar ride to downtown.

Downtown is the most central base for a solo trip, with walkable sights, plenty of transit and many places to eat alone. It is comfortable by day and on the main streets in the evening, but the west side near Pioneer Park and Rio Grande is best avoided at night.
